Diagnostics
Compassionate Care. Confident Answers.
You know your pet better than anyone, and you’re often the first to notice when something isn’t quite right. That’s why when something feels “off,” we’re here to take it from there. Our team has the expertise and diagnostic tools to uncover what’s going on to provide the peace of mind you and your pet deserve.
Our pets don’t understand why they undergo diagnostics like bloodwork, X-rays, or an ultrasound. This can be a scary moment for them, so our team employs Fear Free strategies like treats, gentle handling, and other loving distractions that help them feel comfortable and safe during their blood draw, X-ray, or ultrasound.

In-House Laboratory
With our in-house lab, we can get you answers fast because the sooner we understand what’s going on, the sooner we can help them feel better. Instead of sending everything to an outside lab and waiting days for results, we can run many important tests right here at Mid Island Veterinary. This means less waiting, faster answers, and quicker relief for your pet.
Our in-house lab also plays a vital role in preventive care. During your pet’s wellness exams, lab testing allows us to screen for early signs of disease, even before symptoms appear. Catching issues early gives us more treatment options, helps us prevent bigger health problems, and allows us to personalize care to your pet’s needs.
From routine bloodwork to pre-surgical screenings and urgent testing, our in-house lab ensures your pet gets the timely, accurate care they deserve.
Our in-house lab can run a wide range of tests, including:
- Bloodwork to check organ function, blood sugar, and overall health.
- Blood cytologies
- Ear cytologies
- Fast scan of abdomen or thorax with ultrasound & in-house X-rays
- Skin scrapes
- Pre-surgical screening to make sure your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia before a procedure.
Dental X-rays
When we need a clearer picture of your pet’s dental health, we will take dental X-rays. These X-rays allow us to see below the gumline to check the roots, bone, and supporting structures of the teeth.
Digital X-rays
When we need to get a look inside your pet to see what’s going on, we use in-house digital X-rays. Our digital X-ray, also called radiology, lets us quickly capture clear images of your pet’s bones and internal organs.
Digital X-rays help us evaluate:
- Bones and joints for fractures, arthritis, or injuries
- The chest and lungs for signs of infection or disease
- The abdomen for blockages, stones, or organ changes
Digital X-rays mean faster results, which allows us to share them with you, discuss treatment options right away, and consult with specialists, if needed. Less waiting, less worry… we are committed to your family’s peace of mind.

Specialized Radiology Reports
For cases that require an extra layer of insight, we partner with board-certified radiologists who review diagnostic images and provide detailed reports. This collaboration allows our doctors to make the most informed treatment recommendations for your pet.

Ultrasound
An ultrasound is used when we need to take an even more in-depth look at what’s happening inside your pet. This safe, painless, and noninvasive imaging tool lets us see soft tissues and internal organs in real time, something that X-rays can’t always show.
We offer quick in-house ultrasound scans of the thorax and abdomen to help assess urgent or routine concerns. For more detailed evaluations, including comprehensive abdominal ultrasounds and echocardiograms, we partner with an experienced outside doctor who visits our hospital on select days each week.
Ultrasound helps us evaluate:
- The heart and blood flow
- The liver, kidneys, spleen, and other abdominal organs
- Detecting tumors, cysts, or fluid buildup
Just like with X-rays and lab work, results are available quickly, so we can talk with you about what we find and the next best steps for your pet’s care.
